Metro police take more taxis off the road

The bumper to bumper operations will continue unabated

THE metro police on Tuesday discontinued another 48 mini-buses and impounded a further 43 vehicles in another bumper to bumper operation in Tembisa.

The operation follows another in September where 80 mini-buses were removed from the road.

Spokesman for the metro police, Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago, said the operation targeted vehicles travelling along Andrew Mapheto Drive and Rev RTJ Namane Road between 6am and 2pm.

“The 48 taxis, comprising Toyota Ventures, Condos and Siyayas, were found to be somewhat unfit to be using our public roads and had their licence discs confiscated with strict instructions to take them through a roadworthy test.

“In addition, 48 motor vehicles and light delivery vans in a dilapidated state were immediately impounded and taken to the EMPD pound in Kempton Park,” Kgasago said.

The bumper to bumper operations, concentrating on vehicles that put the lives of road users at risk, will continue unabated until the number of unroadworthy vehicles on our roads are greatly reduced, he added.
