Asbestos classrooms at primary school to be investigated
'I also requested the Department of Labour to inspect the school in line with the Occupational Health and Safety Act'
THE South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) has agreed to investigate possible health risks posed by asbestos classrooms at Chloorkop Primary School.
Mike Waters DA MP and MP for Lethabong Constituency, said he wrote to both the SAHRC and the labour department about the matter.
“I requested a formal investigation into the possible health risks asbestos classrooms would pose to teachers and learners after it came to my attention that 14 such classrooms exist at Chloorkop Primary School. The SAHRC has now responded to my query, stating this matter falls within their mandate and has been accepted for investigation,” Waters said in a statement on Friday.
“In addition, I also requested the Department of Labour to inspect the school in line with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Act 85 of 1993, as amended and to determine whether the school meets health and safety standards. I will revert back on the findings once I have formally received them,” he added.
“The Democratic Alliance believes that every child should have the opportunity to learn in a safe and supportive environment and any possible hindrance to such an environment cannot be tolerated.”
