Association thanks residents for their support

Mr Calvin Stemela said among the regularly staged events was a heritage celebration, where the community came out to spend the day with T-SHAD members.

The Tembisa Self Help Association of the Disabled (T-SHAD) conveyed words of gratitude to the Tembisa community for the undivided support they give to the centre.

The centre organises activities that promote education, training, employment and the development of people with disabilities in Tembisa.

Mr Calvin Stemela said among the regularly staged events was a heritage celebration, where the community came out to spend the day with T-SHAD members.

“We had representatives from the department of Environment, Department of Health and the Rato Children’s organisation. Dr Jabulani Sithole spoke on the importance of africanism and the spirit of ubuntu,” said centre manager Mr Calvin Stemela.

As the event was held on September 24, during Heritage Month, Mr Sithole commended the government on its effort to integrate traditional healers into the public health systems like hospitals.

Mr Stemela said Ms Thando Makapela from Joburg’s Centre for Autism, shed light on autism as a disability.

“In Tembisa we have a lot of people who are trapped in autism. Many doctors and parents do not understand this disability and as a result, diagnosis is made very late,” said Mr Stemela.

Mr Stemela also said Ms Makapela advised parents to look out for symptoms and if they need help they can call her on 079 392 2786.

“Children with autism have special skills and if autism is detected earlier the skills could be nurtured,” said Mr Stemela.

On the day, T-SHAD members were entertained by different cultural community groups.
