Child rape suspect remains in prison

The mother informed her brother who then reported the matter to the police.

A man was arrested October 9 for allegedly raping and impregnating his stepdaughter.

Captain Neldah Sekgobela said the 15-year-old girl came from Maputo with her 40-year-old stepfather and went to stay in Kgatlamping Section, where the suspect is renting a room with the victim’s mother.

“One day the mother left the child with the suspect while she was going to the clinic. It was during the morning and the child was sleeping on the floor – that’s when the suspect started to touch the child inappropriately. It is believed the child was then raped without protection,” said Capt Sekgobela.

Capt Sekgobela said the matter occurred continuously until the mother became aware, but the mother was afraid of reporting the matter to the police because she did not have a South African identity document.

The mother informed her brother who then reported the matter to the police.

“The suspect and the mother were both arrested on Sunday by the Naledi SAPS. On October 10 the case was transferred to the Tembisa South Police Station,” said Capt Sekgobela.

The suspect and the mother both appeared at the Tembisa Magistrate‘s on October 11. The mother was released because she was the one who informed the uncle.

Capt Sekgobela said the suspect remains in custody.
