Kwaito artist has big dreams

"Kwaito music used to carry lots of weight in the 1990s, compared to now."

Despite observations that kwaito music is slacking in the country, compared to the hits of the 90s, upcoming local kwaito artist Mr Kgathatso Matlou vows that he will bring life back to the music genre.

The 21-year-old Mr Matlou, who is disabled, said he has loved kwaito music since he was young.

“I love telling stories. So music is a way for me to speak to the people. My debut album refers a lot to township life,” said Mr Matlou.

Mr Matlou released his debut kwaito album called “Ama lover boyz”.

The album consists of 11 tracks.

Mr Matlou said the best track on the album is “Kwaito is back”.

Mr Matlou said he was inspired by the kwaito hits of the legendary musician Mdu Masilela.

“Kwaito music used to carry lots of weight in the 1990s, compared to now. I feel rap, house and hip-hop have overtaken the pace at which kwaito music used to rock.

“It is high time that Kwaito legends help groom youngsters who could want to be in their shoes. As young, up-coming musicians, we need our brothers and sisters to mentor us so that we can make it to the professional level,” said Mr Matlou.

Mr Matlou considered recording kwaito music in 2008.

His debut album advises people to not hate each other, regardless of how much pain they brought them.

“My album encourages people to not dwell on the past but to move on. Our township has a lot of talent; however, the community is not supporting one another. Tembisa has lots of professional stars shining on the top level. Although they moved out from the township, the up-coming artists struggle with mentorship or people who will help recognise our talent. As young bloods we need all the support so that we can become better people.”

With the perception of other people assuming that disable people cannot progress in life, Mr Matlou is confident that he will become one of the best in Kwaito music.

“Music is my soul and life,” he said.

Mr Matlou markets his music at events, parks, weddings and malls.
