Gurulogic reaches semi-finals of talent show

The talented band is now one of Top 21 acts gunning for the big prize: R500 000 and a dream record deal

LOCAL band Gurulogic has jammed its way all the way up to the semi-finals of popular talent-unearthing TV show SA’s Got Talent.

The talented band, which launched its album ‘Time Traveller’ in May this year, is now one of the top 21 acts gunning for the big prize: R500 000 and a dream record deal.

Auditioning with one of their original songs called ‘Church Girl’, which tells the story of a man who should have listened to his mama when she told him to marry a church girl because she don’t have any ‘drams’, the musicians really impressed the judges and the audience, earning them a unanimous ‘yes’ from all three judges.

With an eclectic and feel-good sound that blends a little bit of everything including Nu-Jazz, Deep-House and Neo-Soulful, the band has been performing its own original songs throughout the competition, including ‘Church Girl’, ‘Skinny Man’ and ‘Road’.

Speaking to EXPRESS, the ensemble’s Rantseli said that being on the show had afforded the band a great platform to be on TV, as previously they had been featured only on radio.

“Being in this competition has also brought the band more attention than before and we have more people appreciating our music,” Rantseli said.

The full crew originally consists of eight members but only four of them are participating in the competition: founding member and pianist Mpho ‘Guru’ Matlala; Bohlale ‘Dj Bo Beast’ Rantseli, who does production, engineering and is the DJ; vocalist Terrence ‘Mckay’ Makhaye; and Thato ‘Silent Assassin’ Kashe, who plays the bass guitar.

The band achieved great success last year, having been a part of big productions including performing at the Kaya FM Family Day, Kaya FM Studios LIVE in January for their Jazzuary theme and later in September for the radio station’s live and unplugged for Soultemba “Resouled”.

They also played at the SABC Technology Awards as well as the 2015 DSTV Delicious Festival, where they shared a stage with American Grammy Award-winning DJ and producer Louie Vega and award-winning local hip-hop artist Cassper Nyovest.

The live show of the semi-finals will be aired on October 30 on e.tv at 6pm. The finals will be aired on November 6 so stay tuned to get voting for your fellow Kemptonians!
