Disaster management conference to be held in city

The conference will take place from November 9 till November 11

THE Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) in collaboration with the Gauteng Public Information Education and Relations (PIER) working group will be hosting a national conference at the Aviator Hotel Conference Centre, for the duration of three days.

The conference will take place from November 9 till November 11.

DEMS spokesman William Ntladi said the main objective of the conference was to discuss and highlight fire and rescue emergency situations experienced in modern times and mitigation strategies in addressing them.

“As far as fire- and rescue-related emergencies are concerned, focal points are mainly on strategies in fire reduction within various communities, strategies in life loss reduction due to fire and all other emergency-related incidents, building up a culture of disaster reduction, disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness, encouragement and efforts to build more resilient communities and the nation at large, and effective mechanism in utilising modern technology in prevention of disasters,” explained Ntladi.

He pointed out that two international speakers from America would speak on the day as the philosophy and concept originates from their country.

“The intention is to ensure that through effective planning, fire and emergency services within the city and the Gauteng province at large, has a well-resourced, coherent and coordinated approach towards community protection, and safety practices are well communicated.”
