Walls collapse during heavy rains

"It was horrible how the water kept coming into the house."

With the heavy rains still threatening Gauteng, several houses in Maokeng Extension, Pilansburg Street and around Tembisa were flooded after the rainfall on Wednesday night last week.
The rain resulted in several yard walls collapsing and household furniture being smashed.
One of the flood victims, Ms Annah Lehong, said they spent Wednesday night clearing the rain water from her house.
“It was horrible how the water kept coming into the house. I even thought it was the end of us. My yard wall has fallen over and some of the household items are damaged. It was disappointing and sad,” said Ms Lehong.
Ms Lehong’s water meter was also uprooted by the floods.
“Beneath my house there is a storm water drain that passes sewage water from all of Maokeng and it sometime leaks into the yard,” said Ms Lehong.
Meanwhile, other victims claimed there are few storm water drains in the area and they are blocked.
“It is why the water flooded into our houses. If there were enough functional drains, we would not experience this disaster. Some neighbours who built yard walls do not want to open holes for the water to pass through their yards. They say it is not their water,” said one resident.
Maokeng residents are appealing to their neighbours to work with one another in order to prevent floods.
