Man steals phone from accident victim trying to call for help

Van Wyk said it appeared there were some serious injuries, including broken limbs

AN accident victim trying to call for help became the victim of an opportunistic cellphone thief on Monday morning.

But Smart Security was smarter than him and caught him not once, but twice.

Smart Security armed response manager, Marius van Wyk, said a VW Polo collided with a newspaper delivery bakkie with six people on the corner of Monument Road and CR Swart Drive at around 5:15am.

“Our guys were coming back to the office after responding to an alarm that went off when they came across the accident which had just taken place. They saw one of the injured persons trying to call for help when a robber grabbed his cellphone and ran,” Van Wyk said.

“My guys chased after him and caught him. However, he managed to escape but they caught him again and he had been arrested,” said Van Wyk.

It is not known what the cause of the accident was.

Van Wyk said it appeared there were some serious injuries, including broken limbs.

He went to the police station across the road himself to report the incident, but officers only managed to arrive at the scene two hours later.
