Pretoria Road bridge not safe – road closed

Barriers were removed several times on Thursday

Alderman Johann Jordaan has warned motorists to avoid using Pretoria Road, as the bridge damaged during the floods on Wednesday afternoon is not safe.

Despite the metro police closing the road several times on Thursday, the barriers had been removed several times, he said.

Barriers were put up at the Elgin Road circle and Beukes Road, forcing motorists to use Vlei Street through Glen Marais to get back onto Pretoria Road.

Heavy traffic delays were experienced during peak hour on Thursday and the situation will remain the same until the road has been fixed. The closing of the bridge poses a major problem for taxis commuting between Kempton Park and Tembisa.

Kempton Express is waiting for comment from the metro as to when construction work will start and how long it will take to reopen the road.

“This section of road is not safe to be used and must be avoided. Please plan your route not to use the road between Beukes Road and the Elgin Road circle,” Jordaan said.
