Residents help out the SAPS to combat crime
"The quick reaction led the police to the two suspects."
Continuous appeals from the Ivory Park SAPS for the community to provide information on crime continues to yield positive results, with a total of three firearms being recovered by the police on Friday last week.
The Ivory Park SAPS received a tip-off from an alert member of the community about the presence of two men who were seen in possession of firearms at a park in Ivory Park, Extension 15.
“The quick reaction led the police to the two suspects, who, it turned out, were in possession of firearms. Upon arrival at the scene, the two police officers explained to the men the reason for their visit. After a little scuffle, during which the suspects refused to cooperate, the officers managed to overpower and arrest the suspects. They were found in possession of an illegal firearm and a toy gun, which to the untrained eye, looked like a real firearm,” said the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane.
Capt Matimulane said the two suspects, aged 26 and 28, are from Alexandra and it was established that they were allegedly involved in a robbery incident in Alexandra township earlier that day.
“In another case of the community performing their civic duty, a 31-year-old man from Kaalfontein was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and one round of ammunition. Again the police rushed to an address in Kaalfontein after they were tipped off about the presence of a man in possession a firearm. Following the procedures, the suspect was duly arrested for illegally possessing a firearm and was taken to the Ivory Park holding cells for detention pending his court appearance,” said Capt. Matimulane.
The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, thanked the community for assisting the police.
“We call upon the people of Ivory Park to help us in making their holidays as safe as possible by being the eyes and ears of the police. Having arrested these suspects, we have lessened the number of robberies and, possibly murders, in Ivory Park,” Brig Ngcobo said.
