Channel Africa visited the Tumelo Children Centre in Ivory Park to observe National Disability Rights Awareness Month on November 10.
National Disability Rights Awareness is celebrated annually in South Africa between November 3 and December 3.
SABC spokesperson Mr Kaizer Kganyago said Channel Africa (the SABC’s International Radio station) chose the Tumelo Children Centre to commemorate the month.
SABC employees had opportunity to spend the day with children at the centre.
“We needed to contribute something and acknowledge what the staff working at the centre is doing for people with disabilities in Tembisa,” said Mr Kganyago.
Channel Africa’s acting marketing manager, Ms Mmaphuti Mpheroane said they donated blankets, disposable nappies, clothes, toys and toiletries.
Tumelo Children Centre’s manager director Mr Solomon Khuthama said they are happy with the donation.
“The donations will go towards helping the children this Christmas. They need new clothes like any other child. We appeal to corporates to also partner with the Tumelo Children Centre in helping the children,” said Mr Khuthama.
The centre currently looks after 52 children.
