Stolen copper cables worth an estimated R500 000 had been seized by Norkem Park SAPS at 11pm on Sunday, November 20.

Two suspects were also detained for possession of suspected stolen cables.

The 38m-long cables belong to the Passenger Rail Agency South Africa (Prasa).

“On the said date railway security officers picked up a signal that there was tampering with railway cables at Kaalfontein Station,” said Norkem Park SAPS spokesman, Capt Lesibana Molokomme.

“Upon searching around, the officers spotted two suspects under the bridge next to the station in possession of cables belonging to Prasa. The two suspects failed to prove themselves as the lawful owners of the property,” added Molokomme.

They, along with the stolen property, were handed over to the police.

The suspects, aged 27 and 37, appeared in court for charges of possession of suspected stolen property and theft.
