Drugs involved in murder of Hawks officer by fellow member

Attempts to reach IPID for comment had been unsuccessful so far

A member of the Hawks’ anti-drug unit stationed at the airport was killed in a shootout with fellow police officers in Jet Park near Emperors Palace on Sunday night.

It is believed W/O Colbern Mashego approached two police officers he suspected were transporting drugs in a police vehicle when he was shot at the intersection of Jones Road and Web Street around 6pm.

One of the police officers then shot himself at the scene, while the other tried to escape in a police vehicle. He was later arrested.

News 24 reported on Monday that, according to Hawks spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, Mashego pulled over two police officers who were driving towards OR Tambo International Airport, allegedly with a bag full of drugs.

When Mashego approached the car, a shootout broke out and he was killed.

When EXPRESS spoke to Mulaudzi on Tuesday, he would only confirm that Mashego was killed. He said he could not give any further comment because the docket had been handed over to theĀ Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

Attempts to reach IPID for comment had been unsuccessful so far.

Boksburg Advertiser spoke to a resident who drove on Jones Road earlier on Sunday afternoon shortly before the incident. She said she noticed a police van parked on the side of the road. Later, when she came back from Emperors Palace, the stretch of road was barricaded with police tape.
