Puppy allegedly dragged alongside vehicle by its Birchleigh owner

The animal was removed by the SPCA and taken to a vet for treatment

KEMPTON Park SPCA is investigating a case of animal cruelty following a disturbing incident in Birchleigh on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Jan du Toit, manager of the society, the SPCA was called to a scene where it is believed a pure-bred seven-month-old bull terrier puppy, called Max, was allegedly dragged next to a car by its owner.

According to Du Toit, Max was allegedly dragged by his collar alongside the vehicle.

The animal was removed by the SPCA and taken to a vet for treatment. The dog’s back paws and rear were seriously injured.

Du Toit said, according to the vet, Max suffered deep abrasions. Its back paws were raw, with the nails chafed into the bloody growth point. Max is still with the vet and has been put on strong pain medication.

Once recovered, he will be taken care of by the SCPA while investigations continue.

The society asks residents who spot animal cruelty or abuse to take videos or photographs if at all possible to assist them in prosecuting the offenders.
