Three suspects, aged 19 and 29, were arrested by the Ivory Park SAPS after they allegedly robbed a couple of their belongings early last week.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS communications officer, Captain Bernard Matimulane, the couple was surprised by a gang of four or five men who broke open the door and entered the room they were sleeping in.
“It is alleged that one of the suspects had a firearm while the others had knives. Upon forcing their way in, the suspects demanded money. They also assaulted the victims. It is claimed they had been tipped off by a woman, who has since disappeared, that the man had received R30 000 in cash and that he had money. It turned out that the information the suspects were acting on was wrong, as the victim did not have that kind of cash on him and was not, as was claimed, a micro lender,” said Capt Matimulane.
Capt Matimulane said after the assault the suspects, having satisfied themselves that the victim was not a micro lender, took their cellular phones, running shoes, a wallet and bag containing clothes.
“In the process the victim managed to recognise some of the suspects and later managed to point the police to one of the suspects’ address. After he was identified by the victim as one of the robbers, the suspect admitted to having been one of the robbers and handed the police some of the items taken during the robbery. Further investigations resulted in the arrest of a total of three suspects. Two of the suspects, including the one with a firearm, are still at large,” said Capt Matimulane.
He said investigations into whether these men may be connected to other house robberies in the Ivory Park area and elsewhere are continuing.
