The campaign was done to observe the call for no violence against women and children.

Captain Neldah Sekgobela said the community members were encouraged to visit the police station’s trauma centre whenever they encounter abuse situations.

“Pamphlets on abuse were distributed to members of the community who visited the mall. Other pamphlets, based on hot spots and safety tips when withdrawing money at the ATM, were distributed,” said Capt Sekgobela.

She said people were also given advice on applying for a protection order and were told to visit the Magistrate’s Court.

“The Tembisa South SAPS arrested a 49-year-old man on December 6 for the alleged rape of a 9-year-old girl,” said Capt Sekgobela.

Capt Sekgobela said the girl is staying with her grandmother and the suspect (the grandmother’s husband) under the same roof at Welamlambo Section.

She said the child’s grandmother was later also arrested.
