The Ivory Park SAPS has welcomed a 15-year sentence handed down by the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court to a man who, on New Year’s Day 2016, stabbed and killed his estranged girlfriend.
Ivory Park SAPS Communication Officer Captain Bernard Matimulane said the perpetrator, Mzama Phineas Nghungunyule, 44, stabbed his girlfriend after an argument.
“The woman was certified dead on the scene. Nghungunyule apparently visited the victim under the pretext of wanting to see their child. On December 15, Nghungunyule was sentenced to 15 years,” added Capt Matimulane.
The Station Commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has welcomed this sentence and further appealed to people in abusive relationships to seek help before it is too late.
“In some cases, abused partners are pressurised by families and economic circumstances to remain in relationships that are harmful to their well being – until they pay the ultimate price. This should not be the case as the police are there to assist in domestic violence situations,” said Brig Ngcobo.
As the incident took place during the 16 Days of No Violence against Women and Children, people were reminded to not resort to domestic violence and that any person who witnesses domestic abuse is advised to notify the police for a timely intervention.
