THE acting Chief of Police, Major General Isaac Mapiyeye, addressed 729 peace corps members converted to traffic wardens at Kempton Park Civic Centre on Monday.
“From January this year, you are permanently employed under the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and by next week, all your uniforms will change from green to brown,” he said.
Except doing point duty and assisting pedestrians/school children to cross the road safely, their functions will also include law enforcement, crime prevention and enforcing municipal by-laws.
Even though they are fully fledged traffic wardens, there are certain courses and internal training they still have to undergo, before they qualify.
