Bertharry English Private School recently celebrated learners who performed well in the 2016 school year.
Deputy principal Mrs Zandile Zwana said on February 23 the learners were awarded for their high marks in various subjects from Grade Seven to 12 for 2016.
“The 2016 class of matriculants who were awarded were those who passed with exemption,” said Mrs Zwana.
She said the school feels that this is a more meaningful celebration than a matric dance, which requires parents to spend a great deal on learners who may not even pass at the end of the year.
Mrs Zwana said, from the class of 2016, Legodi Jacqueline scored the highest marks among those who got a Bachelor exemption.
“Moyo Marvel was also awarded, not only for having achieved a bachelor exemption but for having held the school flag high by being the head girl and a representative in the Ekurhuleni Junior Council.”
She said the Student of the Year trophy and medal were scooped by Mudziwa Humbulani, who was in Grade Seven in 2016 and scored seven distinctions and two Bs.
“Worthy of mention is Garapa Tanatswa, now in Grade 11, who scored high marks in physical science, mathematics, geography, life science among his other subjects and scooped the Top of the Class trophy and medal. Khan Courtney and Kapomba Beatrice also got awards for high marks in their Grade 11, 2016 academic year,” the deputy principal said.
The principal, Mr Harry Kumwenda, gave prizes to educators whose learners achieved 80 to 100 per cent pass rates. Of these, Mrs Havealook Ndlovu, Mr Conrad Lupahla, Mr Lawrance Juru, Mr Nqobizitha Dube and Mr Sipho Mhlakaza had 100 percent pass rate in their respective subjects.
“The purpose of the awards is not to celebrate mediocrity but to honour learners who worked very well in their academic year,” said Mrs Zwana.
