Car misses schoolkids but overturns

Woman saves school children's lives and damages her car.

A car overturned while the driver was trying to swerve away from schoolchildren crossing the road.

The accident happened on March 15 at the corner of Andrew Mapheto Drive and Thami Mnyele Drive.

Taxi driver Mr Chicco Mokwena said he was dropping commuters off when his taxi was suddenly hit by another car.

“While I stopped at the pavement two girl schoolchildren crossed the street behind my car.

The oncoming car suddenly tried to avoid hitting the two schoolchildren and it came for my taxi.

It bumped into my car, hit the pavement, turned over and slid on its roof,” said the taxi driver Mr Mokwena.

“The woman was disturbed by the schoolchildren.”

There were no reported casualties and the community was there to assist in moving the cars away.

“I am worried about my taxi because it is my only source of income.

The community has a negative perception about taxi drivers. They say we are the ones causing accidents and yet we are not.

I appeal to all drivers to be careful on our roads. Please abide to speed limits and mind schoolchildren because some of these roads don’t have speed humps or pedestrian crossings.”

EMPD spokesperson Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago said it is wrong for schoolchildren to cross in areas which are not designated for crossing.

“They must cross at designated areas like pedestrian crossings or at the traffic lights section. They must also cross when it is safe to do so,” said Lt Col Wilfred Kgasago.

He said EMPD has social crime prevention campaigns where, among other things, they teach road safety.

“We have a junior traffic training centre where we bring in children every year and teach them how to react to traffic and how to cross the roads (road safety).”

The driver of the capsized vehicle said it was just an accident because there are designated crossing areas – it is just that children don’t use them.
