The ward seven councillor awarded study vouchers to young people on April 7.

Clr Thabang Jiyane said the 18 young people will go through a short course of financial education.

“Currently the South African education system doesn’t give young people exposure to financial literacy.

“The main problem is that young people do not save money and they also incur a lot of debt. As a result they don’t have financial freedom,” said Clr Jiyane.

“We have six sections in ward seven and we asked members of the ward committee to choose three people from each section. That is how we identified deserving young people. Beneficiaries had to be between the age of 18 and 35.”

He said the course involves spending management, dumping debt, financial momentum and building wealth.

“I feel proud of what the councillor has done for us. He found us a sponsor and now we can be able to study. A lot of young people struggle with study fees and yet Clr Jiyane showed us that he cares by helping young people where he can,” said Admire Ndamane.

The financial independence programme given to the 18 learners is worth R45 000 in total.

Each learner received a R2500 voucher for the short course.

Learners will be studying the course through Boston College.

Clr Jiyane said he obtained the study vouchers through ward seven’s continuous relationship with the American embassy.
