Truck crashes through wall of Van Riebeeck Park house

No one was home at the time of the incident.

A truck driver was not only lucky to escape unharmed, but also lucky other motorists or pedestrians were unharmed after his truck careered backwards down a Van Riebeeck Park street, at about 11am on April 6.

The truck rolled out of control down Groenkloof Street and crashed through the wall of a property in Soutpansberg Drive, stopping just metres from the house.

Before the incident, the driver had apparently parked the truck on Groenkloof Street.

Danie Putter, whose mother is the owner of the property the truck crashed into, said: “When the driver got back into the truck, he must have lifted the handbrake and somehow lost control of the vehicle. The truck then started rolling down the road,”

He said the truck mounted the pavement and hit the walls of two homes along the way.

“It also hit the back of a passing vehicle on Soutpansberg Drive, before crashing into my mother’s wall.”

The brakes allegedly failed when the driver applied them.

According to Putter, nobody was at his mother’s house at the time of the incident.

“My mom has tenants living in the house and luckily none of them were home when the truck crashed through the wall,” Putter said.

The driver was not injured in the crash.
