On July 7, Mayor Masina endorsed the community-based rehabilitation centre in Tembisa.
Skeem National Rehabilitation Chamber (Skeem) in Vusumuzi section is home for 37 young Nyaope addicts who want to turn their lives around and rid themselves of the habit.
The rehab centre is run in a tent at the corner of Brian Mazibuko Drive and Nakuru Street.
Centre leader, Bongani Mabunda, said the rehabilitation centre resulted from a community march once organised by young people who asked for help in beating this addiction.
Mayoral Spokesperson, Gugu Ndima, said Executive Mayor Mzwandile Masina has commended the township-based Nyaope rehabilitation centre whose only facility is a tent and a few beds.
“During the Siyaqhuba Service Delivery Programme in Tembisa on Friday, Mayor Masina visited the Skeem National Rehabilitation Chamber, which was established on 14 February to show love for those affected by this addiction,” said Ndima.
She said Masina committed that his office will supply the centre with groceries, sponges and blankets.
“He instructed the Chief Operations Officer Mr Joe Mojapelo to come up with a plan to assist the project with a building as well as bring other government departments to provide support”.
“Drugs are not right. We thank you for coming forward and not allowing yourselves to perish alone without help. We are grateful that you are here.
“We will work with other stakeholders to find help for you. Drugs are the huge challenge in most of our communities. That is why we want to help you,” Executive Mayor Mzwandile Masina said.
“My approach is that we should not move them to another location but they should receive support right here where they are. We have every intention to work with centres such as these. More importantly, a centre founded by the community to respond to social challenges in the community”.
Ndima said the City of Ekurhuleni seeks to strengthen relations with communities in fighting the scourge of substance abuse like Nyaope.
“The City will work with other stakeholders to support the centre”.
