Kempton Ferals host successful mass sterilisation day

Over Saturday and Sunday, the local NPO managed to trap and sterilised a total of 46 cats

KEMPTON Park Ferals and Abandoned Cats had a successful mass sterilisation weekend on July 22 and 23.

Over Saturday and Sunday, the local NPO managed to trap and sterilise 46 cats. Sadly, one of the cats they trapped had to be euthanised.

“On Saturday, we trapped the cats until about 9pm. We also took in four ‘bottle babies’ some three days old that are now with our very capable bottle-feeding foster mommy. They would have died if we had left them there,” the organisation’s Candice Stacey-Lee Kruger explained.

Kruger says the newborn cats will be up for adoption when they are eight weeks old.

“The sterilisation of these cats will prevent thousands of kittens being born and having to face an extremely hard life. We would like to thank all the volunteers who took time out to come and help us make a difference in the lives of these poor cats.

“A huge thank you goes out to Dr Stewart Christie, Colleen Christie, Dr Kalnisha Bhikha and staff from Eastern Veterinary Clinic for allowing us to use their practice and for putting in so much effort to assist us. We also thank Dr Taryn Bright for assisting.”

The organisation would like to advise the public that they work strictly with feral cats and not domestic cats. Although they don’t have a shelter, people should feel free to alert them if they identify any feral cats that need assistance around Kempton.

“We will gladly add these colonies to our list and sterilise, provide kennels and/or feed but we will not euthanise or remove ferals as this causes a bigger problem when new ferals just take their place.”

Kempton Ferals will hold a mass sterilisation day every two months, over and above their weekly sterilisations.

Anyone wanting to support them financially, can either deposit a donation into the group’s bank account or the vet’s bank account. Food and kennels are also always needed. The public can also donate second-hand goods, which will be sold to raise funds.
