Atlas Road accident: Birchleigh mother almost on her way home
However, there is still a long road ahead for Monica
“In her heart, she knew her two children were gone.”
Talking is Juan van Niekerk, fiancé of Monica van Loggerenberg (28), the Birchleigh mother who lost two of her children in an accident on Atlas Road almost a month ago.
Juan said Monica was only told about the death of Jean-Pierre (8) and Mackayla (3) van Loggerenberg on Friday.

“She took it better than we all expected she would. She said in her heart she knew they were gone,” Juan said on Wednesday.
Her sister Nicolene Oelofse said she cried a lot.
The good news is that Monica should be released from the hospital at the weekend.
“I hope it is on Saturday because it is my birthday. It will be the biggest birthday present I can get,” Juan said.
According to him and Nicolene, there is still a long road ahead for Monica. She has difficulty walking because her right leg is very weak and she can only move her right arm slightly.
Her and Juan’s baby daughter Abigail (eight months) is currently being taken care of by Juan’s mother. She sustained minor injuries in the accident and was found still strapped in her safety chair among grass on the accident scene.
The accident happened on July 8 at around 11.30pm at the intersection with Bass Road. The family was on their way home from Secunda when another car apparently hit them from behind.
