Ekurhuleni mayor visits Dumi Masilela’s home in Van Riebeeck Park

Dumi was shot in what is described as at attempted hijacking while parked on the side of the road in Tembisa

EKURHULENI Mayor Clr Mzwandile Masina visited the home of murdered Van Riebeeck Park star Dumisani Maselela (29) on Friday.

Dumisane’s death shocked the country when news broke that he had been shot in an attempted hijacking in Tembisa on Wednesday night last week, and died in hospital.

Dumi had recently married his wife, Simphiwe Ngema, in a traditional wedding and unfortunately, she saw him for the last time in hospital when he was in pain.

Simphiwe is also a public figure who won the hearts of South Africans when she played the role of Thulisiwe in the SABC 2 soapy, Muvhango.

The family said she was very strong as held him in her arms before he was rushed to theatre for emergency surgery.

Although the suspects have not yet been arrested, police believe they were on a hijacking spree as they used a hijacked vehicle in an attempt to hijack Dumi a few hours later.

The local star, popularly known as Dumi, was a man of many talents. He could sing and act and was also a motivational speaker who visited schools and inspired youngsters never to give up on their dreams.

MEDIA gathered outside the star’s home in Van Riebeeck Park on Friday.

To South Africans the star is known for his beautiful voice when he is behind the microphone and for his role as Sfiso in eTV’s soapy, Rhythm City.

His death saw condolences pour in from fellow celebrities, fans and politicians. News of his passing trended on social media for a couple of days as he was a people’s person.

PEOPLE visited Dumi’s home to show their love and support.

Masina said, “We are here on behalf of the city and the people of Ekurhuleni to pay our respect. We learned about the passing of the talented South African from Ekurhuleni while we were in council. We have just seen the family and have promised to work with law enforcement to make sure we bring these criminals to book.”

ANC national spokesperson Zizi Kodwa visited the home with the mayor to show support on behalf of the African National Congress.

“Death has robbed us of a one-of-a-kind, hardworking and multi-talented young man,” Masina added.

Dumi will be laid to rest on August 12.
