Two burned beyond recognition as truck ploughs into broken down vehicle on N1

The driver of the truck could not be located on the scene and it is believed he fled from the scene

Two people were killed when a truck crashed into a car around 7pm on Tuesday night on the N1 south near the Olifantsfontein off-ramp.

Nick Dollman of Netcare 911 said Netcare 911 crews were travelling on the N1 south when they came across the very serious collision, which had just occurred.

“Reports from the scene indicated the truck crashed into a broken down vehicle, causing several other vehicles to collide. It is understood the broken down vehicle caught fire following the collision,” Dollman said.

“The driver of the truck could not be located on the scene and it is believed he fled from the scene.”

Two people sustained moderate to serious injuries while two others had tragically died. The deceased were unidentified as they had been burnt beyond recognition.

The 41-year-old male driver of the overturned car was stabilised at the scene before being transported by Netcare 911 to hospital. A female from another vehicle sustained a possible fracture to her left arm and was treated by Netcare 911 and then handed over to another ambulance service when more resources arrived at the scene.
