Humble Huka helps the needy

This reintegrated the former nyaope addicts back into the community and made them feel welcomed

Small gestures we make for others go a long way to ease the burden for those who are less fortunate.

For uMthambeka resident Mbongiseni Sidu it is important for people to serve their communities selflessly.

He said people who do this should be celebrated while they are still alive and be recognised for the great work they do.

Sidu said in the community of uMthambeka Section one such person who has dedicated his time to assist where the need arises is Jacob “Huka” Hlahane. Huka has started a feeding scheme to feed the victims of nyaope and other needy people in society.

“He approached local business – which is spaza shops, saloons, taverns and shops – to lend a helping hand by donating whatever they can to get food for children in need. Business people responded positively and they pledged to donate.

“They fulfilled their promises,” said Sidu. He said from the donations received the community got involved in cooking for the vulnerable members of the community, which also included grandfathers and grandmothers.

“This reintegrated the former nyaope addicts back into the community and made them feel welcomed.

“The initiative is a continuous exercise and the community must support it constantly.“

He said there are challenges in heading such community projects but he wanted to encourage Huka to be strong and keep up the good work.

“Huka has a positive serving spirit from being a member of the South African Defence Force serving the country to being a community servant looking after the vulnerable members of the society.

“He is good example to all of us.

“Huka, you are a human being with your own flaws but please utilize the time given to you by God to serve the society because this is your calling from God,” said Sidu. He said the community needs to be also vocal where good things are happening and be actively involved in making their environments a better place to live in.

“You are building the community and a lot of people are benefiting from your efforts,” said Sidu.

“Huka, you may not see your impact now but a lot of us will remember you when you are gone.”
