Ivory Park SAPS have arrested a man for illegal possession of an unlicensed firearm and live rounds of ammunition and for the attempted murder of community patrollers.
According to the Ivory Park SAPS communication officer, Capt Bernard Matimulane, the 40-year-old suspect is alleged to have shot at the patrollers on September 3 without provocation after they came to a shack not far from where he resides at Ivory Park, Extension Two.
“They were apparently looking for someone else. He fired several shots at the patrollers while fleeing the scene. The community saw what was happening and gave chase until they caught him. The suspect was severely assaulted and is currently in hospital under police guard,” said Matimulane.
The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has given thanks to the community members who went all out despite the fact that the suspect was armed and dangerous. He further appealed to the community to refrain from taking law into their own hands as this will breed lawlessness in the communities.
“The arrest of the suspect and recovery of the firearm will go a long way in sending a clear message to other armed bandits that we will stop at nothing to bring them to account,” said Ngcobo.
“I further want to send out my gratitude to the patrollers for devoting their precious time to fighting crime and working closely with the police,” he added.
