POLICE have sent out a stern warning for people to never lie to the police.
This comes after a 32-year-old man was arrested for allegedly lying to police about certain items being stolen out of his car.
It turned out the suspect lied to police in order to cover for the items, as he had stolen them from his place of work.
“In May this year, the man reported he had parked his car on Anson Street in Rhodesfield overnight. He told police when he went to his car the next morning at about 6am, he found one of the vehicle’s windows was broken and his car’s radio and battery were stolen. A drilling machine and toolbox were also missing,” Kempton SAPS spokesperson, Capt Jethro Mtshali, explained.
After months of investigation by Det W/O Frans Rafapa, the suspect finally admitted he had in fact stolen those items from his workplace and reported it to the police just as a cover-up.
He was arrested on September 14 and would face a charge of perjury.
“The station commander, Brig Samuel Maredi, applauded the detective for his sterling investigative skills. He warned that reporting false cases deterred police from investigating real incidents and was a waste of state resources,” concluded Mtshali.
