The police’s Ekurhuleni North Cluster made 226 arrests from Friday until Monday morning.
Capt Manyadza Ralidzhivha said the suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from business robbery to gambling.
“A 24-year-old man was arrested for a business robbery which he and his friends had committed in Tsenelong Section. The owner of the shop alleged he was in the shop when the three men came in. They threatened him with knives, one of them produced a firearm and pointed it at him.
“They robbed him of an undisclosed amount of cash. They further took a box of chocolates, sweets and airtime vouchers. Through information from the community the 24-year-old was traced and arrested,” said Ralidzhivha.
“A 43-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for an attempted rape of a four-year-old girl in Tembisa Ext 11. It was alleged by a 36-year-old woman that she went to her neighbour’s room to ask if he had beer. The 43-year-old man gave her R50 to go and buy beers. She went to a tavern.
“When she came back, she did not knock on the door but just pushed it open. She was surprised to see a four-year-old girl naked on his bed. He was also half naked. She left the room.”
The man came out after a few minutes and he took three of the beers and left her with two. He told her not to tell anybody about what she had witnessed. The suspect went back to his room.
The witness told tenants in other rooms what had happened and also informed the four-year-old girl’s grandmother. The community came out in numbers and started to assault the suspect.
Police arrived and rescued him. He was arrested for attempted raped and detained at Tembisa South Police Station. He had been taken to hospital for treatment.
“In another incident, a 10-year-old was raped by her 44-year-old uncle. The mother was summoned to the school in Tembisa. When she arrived, the teacher of the ten-year-old asked the mother if she had noticed changes in her daughter.
“The mother agreed that she had seen that her daughter had changed the way she walked and her behaviour had changed.
The 10-year-old was called to the staff room. She told her mother that her uncle had raped her. He had threatened her with death if she told anybody about the rape,” said Ralidzhivha.
Ralidzhivha said in other arrests two firearms, together with live rounds of ammunition, were recovered.
“Three men were arrested in Mpho Section by members of the SAPS flying squad. The SAPS member had noticed a vehicle being driven recklessly. They gave chase and stopped it.
“Upon searching the vehicle the police found the driver to be in possession of a firearm to which he failed to produce a license. When police searched a school bag, they found handcuffs inside. Another 36-year-old man was arrested and detained at Tembisa Police Station for possession of an unlicensed firearm.”
A 32-year-old man was arrested for perjury in Kempton Park. The man had, during May, opened a case of theft out of a motor vehicle. He alleged a car radio, a battery and a drilling machine were stolen from the vehicle. The owner of the company he worked for later established there was no theft out of the motor vehicle. The man had taken the goods for his personal use.
