The Kempton community united and aided in the arrest of a 30-year-old suspect on Friday night.
This was after a victim, parked on Pretoria Road in Kempton Park CBD, was held at gunpoint and forced to get out of the vehicle.
“The victim was allegedly hit on the head with a firearm when he tried to resist,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.

“The victim screamed and shouted for help as the suspect got into the vehicle and attempted to drive off.
“Members of the community, who heard the screams, came to the victim’s rescue and managed to stop the suspect.”
The suspect was detained by the community while they waited for the police to arrive.
The suspect was arrested on charges of attempted hijacking and will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon.
“The police have, however, established that the alleged firearm used in the failed hijacking was a toy gun and not a real firearm,” said Mtshali.
Kempton Park SAPS’ station commander, Brig Samuel Maredi, commended the members of the community for their speedy response that led to the arrest of the suspect.
“This shows that when working with the community, crime can be solved,” Maredi said.
