Bogus police officer ‘selling police jobs’ caught in Winnie Mandela

The crime prevention members noticed a framed photograph of the suspect in full uniform on the wall

A 34-year-old man from Winnie Mandela Zone 5 was arrested for allegedly impersonating a police officer.

According to Tembisa SAPS communications officer Constable Patricia Mgijima, the Ekurhuleni North Cluster Crime Prevention members received information about the man on October 23.

When the police found him and questioned him, the suspect claimed to be a reservist at Edenvale SAPS. “The police asked for his appointment certificate, which he failed to produce,” said Mgijima.

The crime prevention members noticed a framed photograph of the suspect in full uniform on the wall and a ceremonial cap hanging on the wall.

“They searched the house and found a police uniform, name tags, CVs and identity document copies. The suspect agreed that the CVs belonged to people he had promised to employ as police officers. He had already taken an undisclosed amount of cash from the people, as he claimed to be looking for jobs for them,” Mgijima said.

She said the man was arrested for impersonating a police officer and fraud and was taken to the Tembisa police station.
