Police nab three who could be linked to follow-home robberies

The hijacked car in their possession was robbed from the owner at gunpoint on October 28.

NORKEM Park SAPS has launched an investigation into whether three arrested suspects could be involved in cases in which people have been followed home from their banks before being robbed.

Capt Lesibana Molokomme, spokesperson for Norkem SAPS, said the men were arrested on Wednesday, November 1 after being found in possession of a hijacked car, unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

“We have received reliable information that they could be linked to the follow-home robberies.”

According to Molokomme, the Ekurhuleni North Cluster Tracing Team worked tirelessly from the early hours of Wednesday morning in order to trace the suspects.

“Members received a tip-off about their whereabouts from a reliable source. The information was followed up and the three suspects were arrested on Isimuku Street, Birch Acres, next to Birch Acres Mall, at 2pm.”

The hijacked car in their possession had been taken from its owner at gunpoint at 8.15pm on October 28 in Tianong Section, Tembisa.

Upon searching the car, the officers found a toy gun, a 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off, and a magazine containing five rounds of live ammunition.

The hijacked car, an orange Toyota Yaris, was fitted with false registration plates, Molokomme said.

The three men, aged between 31 and 36, have been charged with possession of a hijacked motor vehicle, an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
