FOR the time being, both wheelie bins and black bags will be serviced by the metro’s waste removal department.
This follows numerous problems with refuse removal in Kempton Park the past weeks.
According to metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe labour representatives of waste removal employees made it difficult for the metro to execute the service.

“They refused to allow their members to do manual functions that are done by hydraulic systems and also mentioned that same would lead to fatigue and exacerbate ill-health,” Gadebe said on Monday.
“A communique had been shared with councillors before the distribution of 240L bins to respective wards in Kempton Park that only refuse bags would be picked up during refuse collection until November 1.
“However, upon evaluation of the process on October 29, we established that service providers that were responsible for both installation of high bin lifters on refuse removal trucks and the distribution of the bins had not completed those functions as planned. Therefore, we engaged employees that are supposed to empty the bins from November 1 to concurrently remove refuse bags as well but to no avail,” Gadebe added.
After robust engagement, management and labour representatives agreed that both systems of refuse collection shall be employed until bin distribution has been concluded in December.
“Thereafter, only City of Ekurhuleni 240L bins will be serviced and no extra refuse bags placed around the bins will be removed.”
Residents who have more refuse that cannot fit into a single 240L bin will have to request an extra bin through the waste management services offices on 011 999 3753/4047.
