Railway line between Leralla and Tembisa to be closed
The service will be shut down to allow for the construction of pedestrian underpasses.
No trains will run between Leralla and Tembisa Railway Stations for a month while two pedestrian and cycle underpasses are being constructed.
The City of Ekurhuleni, together with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa’s Rail Division, will be shutting the Thami Mnyele and Golden Gate rail crossings to make way for the construction of the underpasses.
The underpasses will serve as subways to allow residents and commuters to safely cross over to the other side of the railway line. This will reduce the number of safety-related incidents in the area, said metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.
The R42-million project will see the shutdown of train services on the line between Leralla and Tembisa stations as of Friday, December 8 until January 8 next year.
During the construction period the following arrangements will apply:
• Trains will not run between Tembisa and Leralla stations.
• Train services will continue running in all other corridors, and will be augmented with additional trains turning around at Olifantsfontein.
• Buses will not be provided between Tembisa and Leralla stations; commuters are therefore advised to arrange their own transport.
• Monthly tickets will not be sold to commuters from the end of November.
• Commuters are encouraged to buy either weekly tickets up until December 4 or return tickets up until December 7.
The City of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng Metrorail apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, and ask for patience and cooperation from commuters and members of the public during the construction period.
