Two suspects were arrested for failing to produce documentation in Kempton Park CBD on Friday last week.
The arrests were made during Operation Fiyela, conducted by Kempton Park SAPS and metro police together with other law enforcement agencies.
The operation was aimed at sweeping away criminal activity in the Kempton Park CBD.
“The area has been identified as one of the hot spot areas, so we want to check all illegal activities like drugs, illegal firearms and possession of stolen property among others,” said Brig Samuel Maredi, Kempton Park SAPS’ station commander.
“We began with the operation last month and there will be more such operations throughout the festive season and into the new year. We want criminals to know there is no room for them, they must watch out and withdraw criminal mentality. We want to see the community enjoying the festive season and we invite the community to come and join hands with us to fight crime in Kempton Park.”
Another suspect was arrested for possession of drugs. Two taxi ranks and West Street were visited by the law enforcers.
“The metro police were also checking the roadworthiness of taxis,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.
“More people are going to be using taxis to travel during the festive season and we want to ensure they are travelling in roadworthy vehicles. They were also checking for outstanding fines.”
Mtshali told EXPRESS that liquor board representatives checked for licences at taverns situated on West Street.
The operation also saw shops being closed and stalls used for gambling were shut down, with the police confiscating the equipment.
More than five police stations were represented, including Olifansfontein, Tembisa, Edenvale and Sebenza.
