No trains between Leralla and Tembisa stations for a month
The service will be shut down to construct two underpasses
No trains will run between Leralla and Tembisa Railway Stations for a month while two pedestrian and cycle underpasses are being constructed.
The City of Ekurhuleni, together with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa’s Rail Division (PRASA Rail), will shut the Thami Mnyele and Golden Gate rail crossings to make way for the construction of the underpasses.
The construction of the underpasses will serve as a subway to allow residents and train commuters to safely cross over to the other side of the railway line. This will reduce the number of safety related incidents in the area, said Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the metro.
The R42-million project will see the shutdown of train service operations on the line between Leralla and Tembisa stations as of Friday, December 8 until January 8 next year.
During the construction period the following arrangements will apply:
Trains will not run between Tembisa and Leralla stations.
The train service will continue running in other corridors except on the Tembisa-Leralla corridor, and the service will be augmented with additional trains turning around at Olifantsfontein.
Buses will not be provided between the stations; commuters are therefore advised to arrange their own transport.
Monthly tickets will not be sold to commuters from the end of November.
Commuters are encouraged to buy weekly tickets up until December 4 or return tickets up until December 7.
The City of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng Metrorail apologise for the inconvenience this may cause and pleads for patience and cooperation from commuters and members of the public during the construction period.
