WATCH: Heist suspects get away with R8 million after security vehicle rolls

One of the security guards sustained numerous gunshot wounds to his legs

ARMED robbers got away with an estimated R8 million after a cash-in-transit heist on Zuurfontein Road near the Spartan intersection in Kempton Park on Friday afternoon.

The vehicle, a Toyota bakkie, was transporting money from Longmeadow to Germiston and Edenvale when the incident happened.

“The two security guards who were in the vehicle transporting money noticed a suspicious looking BMW on Green Avenue,” said Sgt Sharon Mahamba Tsotsotso, spokesperson for Sebenza SAPS.

When the guards sped off the suspects started shooting at them and followed them from Green Avenue to Plane Road and onto Zuurfontein Road.

Tsotsotso told EXPRESS the guards were ordered to pull over by suspects in a second car.

“The guards noticed the occupants of a Toyota Hilux that was driving parallel to them were also involved in the chase as they were pointing firearms at them, instructing them to pull over,” said Tsotsotso.

“During the case, a third car, a BMW, appeared and also tried to stop the guards.

“The chase came to a halt on Zuurfontein Road when the suspects shot at the back wheels of the victim’s vehicle. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll multiple times.

“One of the victims was shot in the arm and the other in the thigh.”

The victims, aged 27 and 52, were transported to hospital by ER24 paramedics.

“ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on the scene to find the bakkie lying on the side of the road,” said Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson.

“The two security guards were found lying 50 metres away in the nearby veld.

“Paramedics assessed both men and found one had sustained a gunshot wound to his arm while the other had sustained numerous gunshot wounds to his legs, leaving him in a serious condition.

“The patients were treated and the seriously injured man was provided with advanced life support interventions. Once treated, the men were transported to hospital for further treatment.”

Tsotsotso added that roughly 15 suspects were involved in the incident.

“I think each car had four to five suspects,” explained Tsotsotso.

“On the other side of the road, a motorist going in the opposite direction, saw what was happening and stopped abruptly, causing the car behind him to crash into him.”

The motorist that crashed into the one vehicle was also transported to hospital for treatment.
