More than 2 000 join Aids Day half-marathon

Hundreds of athletes put their best foot forward as part of the World Aids Day Half Marathon.

FOR some, running the race was just part of their healthy lifestyle, while for others it was a daunting task, but all endured to reach the finish line.

Athletes young and old braved a cloudy Sunday morning on December 3 to take part in a 5km family fun run/walk, 10km race and 21.1km half-marathon aimed at promoting healthy living and denouncing the stigma surrounding HIV/Aids.

HUNDREDS of athletes young and old took part in the 10km and 21.1km race as part of the World Aids Day Half Marathon.

Over 2 000 athletes put their best foot forward as part of the World Aids Day Half Marathon, hosted in Katlehong by the City of Ekurhuleni in partnership with the Soul City Institute for Social Justice.

The fastest runners of the day included 16-year-old Sbonakaliso Mbatha from Katlehong, who finished the 5km run in 28.3 minutes and walked away with a medal for his efforts, and Michael Mazibuko of the Nedbank team who won the 10km race in 31.1 minutes, bagging R1 000 and a medal.

Derocious Makhubalo from the Nedbank team conquered the 21.1km race in one hour 11 minutes, walking away with R1 500.
