Tornado victims receive assistance from the metro

City of Ekurhuleni assists tornado victims in Tembisa.

The City of Ekurhuleni appointed consultants to assess and quantify the aftermath of the storm that hit Tembisa on January 09.

City of Ekurhuleni acting Spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said consultants started their work from January 15.

“The storm hit the area blowing off roofs of buildings in Mqantsa, Emangweni, Sedibeng and Ililiba Sections. About 243 people and 66 houses were affected.

“Two people were taken to hospital for medical observation. One sustained serious injuries and the other one was treated and discharged on the same day.

“The Mqantsa Section was affected the most with 42 affected houses reported so far.

“Eight houses were reported in Emangweni while Ililiba had 16 reported.

“Sedibeng Section was the least affected, with two houses reported,” said Dlamini.

Ekurhuleni MMC for community safety, Clr Vivian Chauke, and together with the Gift of the Givers visited three sections in Tembisa on January 10.

The city handed over food hampers and blankets to the affected residents.

Dlamini said Ekurhuleni has already replaced the roofs on most of the affected houses.

The consultants will be helping the City of Ekurhuleni with assessing the damage and the nature of intervention needed.

Those whose properties were affected but not yet captured by the city may still report to the nearest Customer Care Centre.
