WATCH: Birchleigh’s Yolene to shine in Hollywood

Birchleigh has dance talent in the form of Yolene Exley (14).

Yolene qualified to be part of the South African dance team that will compete in Hollywood in July.

This comes after her impressive performance at the American Dance Awards in Pretoria in October last year.

“Yolene is in the SEDA Dance Academy in Birchleigh and every year she takes part in the American Dance Awards,” said Yolene’s mother, Yolande.

“Two years ago Yolene competed in New York with the South African team and that was an amazing experience.”

Yolene didn’t take part in just one or two categories but in nine.

“For my solo performances I did disco, hip-hop, contemporary and jazz, while my group and duet categories are Bollywood, contemporary, hip-hop duet, jazz duet and lyrical contemporary,” said Yolene.

“It really feels great to be part of the South African team. This is a big and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as I will be representing the country and competing with children from all over the world.”

Yolande said her daughter was at her peak last year.

“The year 2017 was one of Yolene’s best years. She received high percentages for her routines. She was also awarded the personality, costume and energetic awards at the same competition. She also walked away with the Dancer of The Year award at her academy’s annual prize-giving last year.

“My wish is to continue last year’s successes to this year and get the experience of competing in Hollywood.”

The Hoërskool Kempton Park Grade Nine learner told EXPRESS that competing in Hollywood would be an absolute dream for her.

“I have been dancing since nursery school and I love it with a passion,” said Yolene.

“It would mean a lot for me to be able to join the South African team and compete in Hollywood.”

The only obstacle in Yolene’s way is the money needed for the trip.

“We need at least R36 000 for flights and accommodation, excluding food and spending money,” said Yolande.

“We are trying to raise the funds for her trip and appeal to anyone willing to assist to contact us.

“We need to collect the funds by April to secure her place in the competition. Any form of donation will make a difference and be greatly appreciated.
