About 30 EMPD officers comprising the Kempton Park Precinct, K9 and SWAT units blitzed the central business district of Kempton Park in a crime prevention drive on Saturday night.
Focus was placed on ensuring that bottle stores, taverns and clubs adhered to the conditions of their operating licences.
The operation, spearheaded by Lieutenant Colonel Leon Saaiman, commenced at 6pm and concluded at 2am on Sunday morning, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the metro police spokesperson, said.
“Seven nightclubs were visited to ensure that the noise levels were acceptable and that no speakers were placed outside the premises. A bottle store on the corner of West Street and Voortrekker Road was shut down for operating outside of its business hours and was issued a written warning.
“Patrons from the bottle store drink and walk on the roads, thereby exposing themselves to being run over by vehicles and also being targeted for muggings,” he added.
A church in the CBD notorious for unacceptably high levels of noise was also visited. By the time the officers arrived at the church, the service had concluded.
Pre-identified hotspots were visited where 40 vehicles and 94 pedestrians were stopped and searched.
Dries Niemandt Park was fine-combed but this was to no avail after a Ford Ranger LDV was stolen in the area.
Information provided stated it drove in the direction of the park. Eighteen spot fines were issued for a variety of offences.
