Robbers crash two cars in Rhodesfield with victims in hot pursuit

The four suspects might have succeeded in their crime, had they not stopped for some refreshments.

Four men were arrested on Saturday afternoon after stealing a young man’s cellphone in Cresslawn and crashing while fleeing from the scene.

The robbers opened fire on the victim and his father, who chased after them.

The four suspects, of whom one was armed, might have gotten away with the crime had they not stopped at a Rhodesfield café.

According to Gerrie Germishuizen, sector crime forum chairperson of section five, the young victim alerted his father that he had been robbed. Father and son then chased after the suspects, who fled in two separate vehicles towards Rhodesfield.

Here, the suspects stopped at a café for refreshments, where they realised they were being pursued.

“A chase ensued in which the four suspects, two in each car, fled to Household Street in Rhodesfield. As the victims closed in on the suspects, one man fired at the father and son with a 9mm pistol,” Germishuizen said.

He added that gunshots could be heard in the neighbourhood, which was when Airwolf Security and the police were notified. Both sets of fleeing suspects lost control of their cars, a white Kia and silver Renault Megane. One of the cars crashed into an electricity box on the pavement.

Airwolf Security chased two suspects on foot and arrested them. These two suspects told the security company where their accomplices were, which led to their arrest by the police and CMS Security.

Germishuizen praised Airwolf Security and CMS Security for their hard work, as well as the police, who were on the scene immediately.

No-one was injured and the cellphone was returned to its owner.
