Grade 10 learner hangs himself at his Difateng home

Banele will be laid to rest at Mooifontein Cemetery on Saturday (tomorrow)

19-year-old Banele Shaun Dibetso committed suicide at his family home on January 25 by hanging himself from a hook with a rope.

Difateng-based Dibetso was a learner at Tembisa High School.

Speaking to a family member, Ronny Dibetso, the family believes the reason behind the suicide could be that he failed Grade 10 twice.

Ronny said on the day of incident, Banele’s mother has gone to work.

“Banele was ready to go to school but first took his younger brother to crèche. Apparently, when he came back from the crèche, he never went to school. The house was empty at that time.

“We believe Banele committed the suicide in the morning because my uncle came to check on them after school hours at around 3.20pm. He found the house locked and nobody answering and left.”

He said the youngster’s mother later arrived from work and found the house locked. When she called for her children, nobody answered.

“She then went to pick up her child at creche. Banele was found at around 6pm inside the house,” said Dibetso.

He said the deceased was a quiet child and loved hip hop music. “He had friends and loved music. He left behind his hip hop lyrics he enjoyed writing.

“He was a disciplined child, we just do not know what troubled him to such an extent that he took his own life,” added Dibetso.

To his mother, Banele was the second born.

Tembisa SAPS spokesperson Const Patricia Mgijima said an inquest docket was registered at the station.

Banele will be laid to rest at Mooifontein Cemetery on Saturday (tomorrow). The funeral service will be held at house 536 Difateng Section, starting at 11am.
