Fire-fighter Elias Matlakemg (39), geared-up in yellow protective wear, swiftly put out the smoking danger.

A fire truck raced up Veld Street in Glen Marais at 7:20pm on Friday evening following a faint hint of smoke hanging in the air.

The firemen arrived at Pendoring Avenue a few minutes later to be met with a medium-sized pit fire, where an unknown suspect had set alight rubbish.

Luckily local fire-fighter Elias Matlakemg (39) put out the fire, which was a hazard in the residential area.

Fire-fighter Elias Matlakemg (39), geared-up in yellow protective wear, swiftly put out the smoking danger.

Crew manager CB Gumede warned that, although this incident migh have been be small, it was still dangerous.

“Kempton Park is spaced in such a way that smoke from any fire, big or small, can disturb passing flights, interfere with radio control signals and is a fire-hazard in a residential area.”

He advised that residents should dump their rubbish correctly, instead of making a fire at their homes. “There is a dumping site on Highveld Road people can use.”

No-one was home at the time of the incident. According to Gumede, the metro police would visit the home-owner to inform them about the correct residential by-laws.

A pit filled with rubbish proved to be the cause of smoke in the area.
