In 2016, the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) embarked on a township regularisation programme.
The aim of the programme is to regularise certain sections of various townships.
The City targeted to regularise 58 townships during the beginning of the 2016/2017 financial year.
Out of the 58 committed to, the City has confirmed that 57 have been completed, with the Deeds Office registration underway.
The City further indicated that the only outstanding section is Moriting in Tembisa and registration is expected in February or March this year.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni will be keeping a close eye on this process, to monitor and ensure that registration does, indeed, happen.
“As the DA City Planning Oversight Committee, we have been probing and posing questions pertaining to the progression of this project. Our particular interest is the registration at the Deeds Office and the issuing of Title Deeds to the correct beneficiaries. The completed 57 township sections will yield a total number of 33 271 Title Deeds. While this may seem progressive, it is not clear when these Title Deeds will be issued to their beneficiaries,” said Clr Tebogo Masenya, DA PR councillor and member of the City Planning Oversight Committee in Ekurhuleni.
Masenya added they will now do oversight visits to sections of Tembisa to follow up with the identified beneficiaries and verify whether they have received any communication or notification from the metro with regards to the receipt of their Title Deeds.
The DA in Ekurhuleni believe that it is important to provide certainty to people living in these areas.
“Once these townships are formally recognised and regularised, residents will feel secure enough to start investing in their dwellings. We will, therefore, continue to hold the City accountable and apply pressure on them until the total completion of this project,” said Masenya.
