Suspicious bag leads to evacuation at OR Tambo – flight delays expected
The police provided airport management with the assurance that passengers and customers could now return to the terminal building

Part of the terminal building at OR Tambo International Airport was evacuated on Monday morning while the South African Police Service dealt with an unattended bag.
Airport spokesperson, Leigh Gunkel-Keuler, said when the unattended bag was observed, the airport’s canine unit together with the police attended to the scene.
“As part of safety protocol and to ensure the safety of passengers and customers in the airport terminal building, people were evacuated from the area. The police provided airport management with the assurance that passengers and customers could now return to the terminal building.
“From an airport operations perspective, we have returned to normal. However, we do anticipate some flight delays as a result of the evacuation.
“We apologise to clients, passengers, retail concessionaires and all other stakeholders for the inconvenience and ask that they plan accordingly,” said Gunkel-Keuler.
