Metro police get its teeth out for drunk drivers

The operations will be conducted periodically to bring to book both drunk and reckless drivers.

The Greater Kempton Park area has had several serious and fatal accidents in recent months attributed to mostly drunken driving.

This unacceptable situation prompted both the Edleen and Kempton Park precincts of Ekurhuleni Metro Police to hit at hot spots on Sunday between 2pm and midnight, said metro police spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

The Kempton Park precinct targeted Blaauwpan in Bonaero Park, Kempton Park CBD, Park and Jubilee streets, whereupon 17 drivers were nabbed for driving under the influence of intoxicating alcohol.

Meanwhile, the Edleen precinct swooped on Birch Acres, Birchleigh North and Norkem Park where 19 drivers were apprehended for drunken driving.

“The arrested suspects had their blood drawn at the Kempton Park precinct and at Tembisa Hospital. Edleen precinct arrestees were detained at Norkem Park Police Station, while the Kempton precinct suspects were locked up at the Kempton Park Police Station.

“The operation was a success as it removed drivers who would potentially have been the cause of or contributed to accidents in the area. The operations will be conducted periodically to bring to book both drunk and reckless drivers,” Kgasago added.
